The medical mediation system of researchers at Széchenyi István University has won a utility model protection

The Hungarian Intellectual Property Office has granted utility model protection to the multimedia medical transmission system developed by the Digital Development Center of Széchenyi István University. The innovation enables hundreds of participants to follow minimally invasive surgeries in real time, supporting education and reducing logistical burdens.

The MedTech & SportTech Division of Széchenyi István University’s Digital Development Center has received intellectual property recognition for its multimedia transmission system, which has been under development for three years with the professional support of the Petz Aladár University Teaching Hospital. Securing utility model protection marks a significant step forward in the Győr-based institution’s healthcare R&D activities.

A streaming platform supporting education

The platform can transmit minimally invasive, endoscopic, and laparoscopic procedures in real time over the hospital’s internal network, contributing to the training of healthcare professionals.

“The advantage of the system is that it not only transmits the image of the medical device but also shows the surgeon’s movements, which greatly facilitates the teaching process,”

highlighted Dr. Péter Prukner, Head of Division. The device features multiple video and audio inputs, allowing several instruments to be connected simultaneously.

Strategic goal: international IP protection

The development aligns with the university’s strategy to secure intellectual property rights for its innovations.

“This year we have already presented eight intellectual creations, with three patent applications underway. Our goal is to elevate IP protection to the international level,”

said Szilvia Vadász-Kalocsai, international expert at the Center.

University and hospital in partnership

The success of the project is based on the close cooperation between the university and the Petz Hospital. Dr. Balázs Villányi, Medical Director, and Dr. Zsolt Szepesváry, Head of the Urology Department, emphasized that the system supports not only hospital operations but also education.

From research results to market-ready products

The IP process was supported by FIEK and innovation manager Zsolt Kohus.

“The newly protected system is a perfect example of how the university’s research results can be utilized not only through publications but also as valuable products for the market,”

he underlined.
