Real-Time Innovation on Lake Balaton – The 57th Kékszalag Raiffeisen Grand Prix Launches with an Upgraded Tracking System

Thanks to the GPS-based tracking system developed by Széchenyi István University’s Digital Development Center in collaboration with Magyar Telekom, this year’s Kékszalag sailing competition will once again be digitally accessible—not only on the water but also for spectators at home. University students are also actively involved in the development, making this innovation an outstanding example of practice-oriented education.

On July 10, 2025, the 57th Kékszalag Raiffeisen Grand Prix—the longest inshore sailing race in Europe—will set off again from Balatonfüred. This year, the event is once again digitally supported by the boat tracking system developed by Széchenyi István University in partnership with Magyar Telekom, returning in an even more reliable and user-friendly version.

The real-time GPS-based system enables the movement of hundreds of competing boats to be followed online—even from home. Palm-sized devices installed on each boat collect satellite-based position data, which is transmitted via Telekom’s 5G network to a web platform. This digital solution not only enhances the viewer experience but also provides essential information to the organizers for managing the event.

The tracking system represents not just a technological advancement—it is also of great educational value. Students at Széchenyi István University are actively involved in the development and operation of the system, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a real market environment. This further strengthens the link between the university’s knowledge base and competitive sports.

“The tracking system opened a new chapter in the history of the Kékszalag last year, and this year it returns in an enhanced form to provide even more real-time data and an even greater experience for sailing enthusiasts,” emphasized Dr. Gábor Dósa, Head of the University-Industry Cooperation Center and CEO of Uni Inno Zrt., at the press conference held on July 9 at the Anna Grand Hotel in Balatonfüred.

Thus, the Kékszalag Grand Prix is becoming increasingly impressive, transparent, and accessible—not only on Lake Balaton but also in the digital space—thanks to the exemplary cooperation between Hungary’s academic sector and the telecommunications industry.
